Reviving rural pockets

VILLAGES PLAY a significant role in the country's march towards development. But the problem is that many of them do not even have the basic facilities. Voluntary service organisations have been supplementing the efforts of the Government to provide them these facilities.

The Action for Rural Rejuvenation programme of the Isha Foundation, which aims at `revitalising' the rural pockets of Coimbatore, was launched in the backward areas of the district recently. On the occasion, three mobile clinics were also inaugurated by K. Subbarayan, Lok Sabha MP, Coimbatore.

A sapling planting drive was also launched in Haripuram locality. The Coimbatore East MLA, V.K. Lakshmanan and the Deputy Mayor, K. Raghupathy, planted saplings.

The mobile clinics, three of which started operations in the locality, distributed medicine to more than 400 people.

The former Mayor, V. Gopalakrishnan, attended.
