Raising funds

THE CPI (M) MP, P. Mohan, wrested the occasion of the inaugural run of the Madurai-Chennai Koodal Super fast Express in Madurai on Thursday, to compel the Madurai (West) MLA, Valarmathi Jebaraj, to allot Rs. 10 lakhs from her constituency development fund, for upgrading facilities at the Koodal Nagar railway station.

The Rajya Sabha MP, S. Agniraj, was the first to announce Rs. 10 lakhs for the purpose.

Mr. Mohan followed suit and prevailed upon the lone MLA on stage, Ms. Valarmathi, into contributing the same amount, in the presence of railway employees, police personnel, media persons and passengers.

An embarrassed Ms. Valarmathi fumbled for sometime and finally gave the green signal to Mr. Mohan.

Another interesting aspect of the occasion was a VVIP saloon attached to the Koodal Express on both sides.

Anticipating the Union Minister of State for Railways, A.K. Moorthy, to travel in it, the officials attached the saloon.

However, the Minister preferred to fly back to Chennai.
