PUT PUPPETS, shadow-play and music together and what do you get? Puppet shows and shadow theatre, of course. This programme will be staged at the auditorium of the Alliance Francaise de Bangalore here at 6 p.m. on December 4.

Presented by French company, Theatre de Petit Miroir, the event is basically a retelling of an "amusing and cruel game".

In French, it is called Le Roman du Renart (The Fox Story). And according to Alliance cultural coordinator, Priyamvada Majumdar, "shadow theatre is the ideal medium for this amusing and cruel game in which Renart excels and where each one of the characters, the duper and the duped all rolled into one, always end up triggering laughter."

The puppets are finely chiselled and colourful figurines made out of buffalo skin. The charm of the performance is enhanced by the puppeteer's skilful manoeuvres, and the songs "that lend a certain rhythm to the show".

Jean-Luc Penso has founded this puppetry group. He studied puppetry in Taipei. The Fox Story is a French-inspired work in terms of the shadows, the puppets and the music. Critics have liked the show. Le Parisien, for example, has described it thus: "It is lively, comic and original. Whilst being faithful to the source and cleverly adapted to a modern context... the songs add a delightful air of folly to the story."
