Radhakrishnan at work.

AS AN artist, Radhakrishnan had cause for special satisfaction when he handed over to the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, a portrait of Antony himself the other day.

Radhakrishnan says it was the 8,000th portrait he had done, the majority of these on celebrities from various walks of life, including cinema.

He invariably presents the original to his subject and is content with keeping a copy to himself.

"The Chief Minister just smiled and congratulated me,'' he says.

Radhakrishnan's portrait of Indira Gandhi has found a place in the AICC office at Delhi. K. Karunakaran, E.K. Nayanar, Vayalar Ravi and Kamala Suraiyya have all been the beneficiaries of this 48-year-old man's artistic munificence.

A native of Sasthamcottah in Kollam, Radhakrishnan has done portraits of a host of film actors from Sathyan and Premnazir to Mohanlal and presented these to them.

A self-taught artist, Radhakrishnan began his career as poster-designer with Udaya Studio at Alappuzha.

His fondest memories are about Sathyan, with whose help he got break in Udaya.

His current project: to bring out a compilation of his portraits with the help of the Department of Culture and the Chitrakala Academy.
