The recent Sabarimala visit of T.K.A. Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has brought to light the "negligence" of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) in ensuring adequate fire safety measures at the mechanised `aravana' preparation and packing unit attached to the Ayyappa temple complex.

During an inspection, Mr. Nair found that the electrical wiring at `aravana' plant was in bad shape. He was shocked to see live wires hanging from the walls. "Has this been cleared by the Electrical Inspectorate?'' he asked.

Experts have recommended shifting of the plant from the close vicinity of the temple to a distant place like Paandithavalom following a fire at the `aravana' godown a year ago.

However, the TDB has decided to set up another `aravana' unit at Paandithavalam, instead of shifting the existing plant.

Mr. Nair directed the TDB to take steps to replace the wiring of electrical installations at the plant. He also asked the TDB to initiate only eco-friendly development projects at Sabarimala in its efforts to facilitate more pilgrim amenities in the coming months.
