Public reaction in Kerala towards AIDS sufferers and even suspected carriers of the HIV continues to be insensitive, even inhuman, notwithstanding campaigns to remove misconceptions about how the infection is caused and transmitted. There have recently been instances of entire groups of residents ganging up against children with suspected HIV infection attending school, for fear that other children will contract the virus. Does the awareness drive on HIV/AIDS need a new orientation in totally literate Kerala? How can this society treat the victims with dignity and kindness?
