On a new drive

TWELVE NEW faces will join the auto-drivers' bandwagon in Virudhunagar district this month. The best part of it is that all the new faces are women.

Thanks to an innovative skill training programme of Jan Shikshan Sansthan, an institute for people's education in Sivakasi, which provided 35-40 days' intensive training for rural uneducated women in the district.

While Mahalir Thittam and the district police selected the candidates, the Rotary Club of Sivakasi Central sponsored the training programme.

After completion of training, the District Rural Development Agency and Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation have come forward to provide loan assistance for buying new auto-rickshaws for these women, the JSS director, R. Vijayalakshmi, said.
