ONE OF the oldest theatre groups of Tamil Nadu, the UAA has been having `celebration time'. The golden jubilee celebration, commenced on September 28, provided the occasion for several prominent artistes to recount the role played by the group in nurturing Tamil theatre.

In the last one month, more than half-a-dozen public functions were held and some of the successful dramas of the group performed. Starting from the Governor P.S. Ramamohan Rao to the Social Welfare Minister B. Valamarthi to the former Madras High Court Judge, K.S. Bakthavatsalam to the Bharatanatyam exponent Padma Subrahmanyam to the artistes Poornam Viswanathan and Kamal Hassan to the seasoned film director K. Balachander were all there at the functions to commend the UAA for its role.

The artistes turned nostalgic, recalling how their association with the group provided the sound foundation for them in their career. They all noted that Y.Gee. Mahendra had been carrying forward the legacy left behind by his father, YGP and Pattu, another founder of the UAA.
