Non-controversial Secretary

THE OUTGOING Corporation secretary, P.Venugopal, occupied the chair for less than two years, but during this brief period, he appears to have won the hearts of his office colleagues and councillors alike.

A non-controversial figure who has always shied away from the limelight, Mr. Venugopal carried with him a rich experience gained from his stint in various other local bodies.

This experience apparently stood him in good stead, enabling him to pilot major projects taken up by the civic administration.

One of the factors that endeared him to employees and councillors cutting across party lines was easy accessibility.

And his unflappable attitude was evident on more than one occasion.

When the United Democratic Front-led Opposition forcibly occupied the secretary's room to register its protest over being denied an office, Mr. Venugopal took it in his stride and calmly proceeded to chat them up.

This mellowed the Opposition members who later withdrew.

As one who has always taken care to maintain a careful distance from newspersons, Mr. Venugopal has won the grudging admiration of the press corps reporting on civic matters.

Coming at a crucial time when the Corporation has embarked on a clutch of ambitious schemes like the e-governance project, councillors feel that Mr. Venugopal's transfer would pose difficulties.
