New Proverbs from old

HOW DO you counter negative attitudes in society? Simple: You rewrite proverbs and ensure that the `janta' picks up the lingo.

At least that is what Tamil Nadu Forum for Creche and Child Care Services (TNForces) has done, to combat the negative attitudes that exist in society, inimical to the growth and development of certain sections.

The Forum has tried to correct the `Literature of the commons' - proverbs, rewrite them so as to reflect a certain positive outlook and provide accurate information at the same time.

As a prelude, it undertook a study of the Tamil proverbs, with the aid of language scholars and researchers and came out with a 1000 proverbs on childbirth, early childhood, women, differently abled and dalits.

Of this, 647 proverbs were chosen for rewriting. Some 437 new proverbs were worked out on the same meter and rhyme as the old ones, according to K. Shanmugavelayutham of TN Forces.

The first copy of the book `Pazhamozhigalil Pootha Pudhu Mozhigal' was released recently by the former Vice Chancellor, Tamil University, Avvai Natarajan and the first copy was presented to a representative of the Bernard van Leer Foundation, which supported the study.

The release over, all it takes now, is an attempt to get the `Pudhu Mozhigal' out of the book and onto the field, feed it into the mouths of children and youth.

And thereby, hope to create a revolution in the way society looks at issues.
