KURNOOL: The dilapidated structure in the Dalit locality of Pedapadu village near Kurnool where the ancestral house of the former Chief Minister, Damodaram Sanjeevaiah stood will be replaced by a community hall in memory of the great leader. The Minister for Lift Irrigation, M. Mareppa, visited the place on Tuesday and proposed a community hall at a cost of Rs 15 lakhs. A statue of Sanjivaiah will be installed in the village.

The visit of Mr. Mareppa to Sanjeevaiah's ancestral home has political importance too as he was an arch rival of Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy, although both were in the Congress. Sanjeevaiah occupied high positions like the AICC president and the Chief Minister. Mr. Mareppa who is engaged in a political battle with Kotla Suryaprakasa Reddy, Kurnool MP, declared Sanjeevaiah as his "moral guru.''

A brilliant political strategist, Sanjeevaiah closely worked with Jawaharlal Nehru at the national level and groomed leaders from the downtrodden sections like K.E. Madanna. Coming from a poor Dalit family, Sanjeevaiah was a brilliant student of Municipal High School. One of his friends recalled that throughout his school days he brought only one dish for lunch - jowar roti and chilli powder and most of the times came poorly dressed. Yet, he excelled in education.
