Language matters here

CHENNAI: What is in language? Lots. If it is a public meeting.

Particularly so if a speaker happens to be a politician. This situation was faced by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, when he addressed a public meeting at Shenoynagar here as part of the birthday celebrations of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, on Friday.

When he came to the public address system, he started off in Tamil by referring to the names of DMK leaders on the dais, much to the joy of those gathered.

In fact, the whistling and shouting was more when he said "Sagothara, Sagotharigale" (brothers and sisters). But he could not continue in the same language. " I am very very sorry. I am not able to speak in Tamil".

He asked in English whether he should speak in English or Telugu.

Amid shouts and whistling, a chorus came that he address in Tamil. Some others shouted that he speak in Telugu.

Later, Mr. Reddy spoke in Telugu for 15 minutes.

Of course, he was cheered frequently by the audience particularly when he showered praise on Mr. Karunanidhi for his role in national politics and in bringing Krishna water to Chennai.
