Instant justice?

FOR A week now, the corridors of Ripon Buildings, Chennai Corporation's headquarters, have been abuzz with talk about the sacking of an AIADMK councillor from her position in the women's wing of the party.

According to sources, the woman councillor was summoned and severely reprimanded by the AIADMK chief, Jayalalithaa, when the council meeting was in progress last week. The councillor, who continues to hold an important post in the Health Standing Committee,is facing several allegations of corruption, including one relating to a chemical distributor in Nungambakkam. She also lost her party post soon after this meeting.

The action by the high command has shaken AIADMK councillors. Some of them recalled a letter from their leader that was circulated when they took charge in October, 2001. In the letter, the councillors were warned to steer clear of malpractice. And this time, the message seems to have reached home loud and clear, "The recent act is another reminder to us to rededicate ourselves to the public," one councillor said.
