In a tight spot

The other day, the Kovalam MLA, Neelalohitadasan Nadar, found himself in an unenviable position during a meeting convened by the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, to discuss city development plans.

Stoutly opposing the Chief Minister's suggestion to consider a ban on processions along the Mahatma Gandhi Road, Mr. Nadar argued that such an issue had no relevance at a meeting convened to discuss development activities.

The Culture Minister, G. Karthikeyan, retorted that there was nothing wrong in raising the matter. Mr.Nadar's vociferous protest had no takers, even among the Opposition leaders who were present at the meeting.

Mr. Karthikeyan added that there was no reason for Mr. Nadar to become so emotional. As the Chief Minister started to clarify his position, Mr. Nadar appeared to lose his cool and demanded to know why he was being interrupted.

The LDF leaders including M. Vijayakumar and Varkala Radhakrishnan remained mum during the exchange. Finding himself completely isolated on the issue, Mr. Nadar finally backed down.
