'Hijra' Habba

BANGALORE WILL play host to a "hijra habba" on September 3, and Town Hall has been fixed as the venue.

According to organisers, Vividha (an autonomous collective of sexual minorities) and the Peoples' Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), a "hijra habba" was held last year "in the light of increased targeting of these people by the city police".

That event was a celebration "to demand fair treatment for `hijras' and other sexual minorities", and was attended by over 200 hijras, and women's and human rights' activists.

This year's event is another attempt to "make our voices heard through a public celebration of our struggle," say the two groups.

This year's "habba" coincides with the release of PUCL Karnataka's fact-finding report on Human Rights Violations against "hijra", "kothi", and male sex workers.

And the "hijras" say they have collected money for the event through begging.
