Green mantra

THE NEED to green the environment is a pressing concern in Chennai. With more and more ground being eaten up by multi-storey building, green space is fast sinking in the city. Many environmentalists believe that with increasing vehicular pollution and shrinking greenery, a lungful of fresh air might soon be a thing of the past.

NCC cadets in Chennai recently launched themselves into social service, with the motto, `Green is Queen'. Adding to the greenery of the metro was their plan.

In a grand function organised by the Madras A NCC group, under the aegis of the NCC Directorate (Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andaman and Nicobar) at the Island Grounds on Saturday, each cadet planted one sapling. Led by the Commandant, Officers Training Academy, S.D. Avasthi who inaugurated the event by planting the first sapling in the Grounds' Sports and Recreation Complex, 900 enthusiastic cadets managed to dig in at least 1000 saplings at the end of the day.
