THE `NAVARATHIRI' festival is widely celebrated with religious fervour all over the country. It has become general practice to showcase dolls specially prepared for the occasion, in every household. Visiting each house on those nine days is an experience in itself.

Every house would invariably get a facelift with specially decorated staircases displaying the dolls. And there will be a healthy competition among neighbours in showcasing the dolls. Yet nothing can match the doll display at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

Every year the temple has a grand exhibition of dolls. This year too the temple authorities have made elaborate arrangements to make the festival a grand success.

"The dolls will be displayed in the second `praharam' of the Amman Sannadhi. On all days, the presiding deity will have a different `alankaram'. This time around, the authorities have planned to draw rangoli using cereals and vegetables. They have also made arrangements to display underwater drawings, which are sure to be unique," says P. Baskaran, Joint Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment and Executive Officer of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

The temple authorities have planned to set up impressive lighting arrangements inside the temple to present it in all its glory.

Painting work is already on to give a fresh look to the temple in view of the festival. The authorities have arranged to distribute different `prasadam' including laddu, sweet pongal, and `kalkandu' pongal on all days from October 15 to 23.

Every year the grand exhibition held at the temple displays around 3000 dolls and with this year's festival round the corner, the temple administration has requested devotees to donate dolls to the temple, which would also be displayed at the exhibition.

Further details can be had from the temple superintendent of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, who can be contacted by phone at (0452) 2344360.
