IEI spares you the trouble of taking an entrance test.

To many, professional engineering education remains an area beyond reach. Fee structure and entrance test are major hurdles in their path. An option for such students is the course offered by the Institution of Engineers, India (IEI).

The institution conducts classes for AMIE (Associate Member of Institution of Engineers) examinations comprising two parts, A and B. There are separate streams for diploma-holders and those with Plus Two qualification. There is a choice of optional subjects and the students can opt for part-time or full-time courses.

Unlike the semester system followed by regular colleges, there is no time-frame for passing the examination. A pass in both A and B examinations is equivalent to the Bachelor of Engineering degree. The institution also conducts Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers (GATE) for degree-holders. A pass in GATE ensures scholarship for the Masters degree programme in engineering.

The IEI has offices in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, apart from regional centres at Thrissur, Palakkad and Kozhikode.

There is no need to take an entrance test for the IEI programme.

The other advantages include low fees and part-time training facility, says Ambika C.K., honorary secretary of IEI in Kochi.

The fees charged at present for coaching for Section A examinations is Rs. 7,500 for diploma-holders and Rs. 15,000 for non-diploma holders; that for Section B is Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 30,000 respectively.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology conducts examinations on behalf of IEI, Kochi.

The examinations are conducted biannually. The AMIE syllabus is reviewed by a curriculum committee of the institution that has its headquarters at Kolkata.

The committee meets regularly and updates syllabus, says E. Kurien Mathew, chairman of IEI's Kochi centre.

The Kochi centre of IEI will have new premises soon. The construction of its own building near Thammanam is in progress. IEI came into being in 1920 with the patronage of the Industrial Commission.
