Festival treats

ALL MALAYALAM TV channels are getting ready to go overboard to celebrate Vishu. Kairali's `Venal Mahotsavam', or summer festival, begins on Vishu day, April 15. The channel's `Vishukkani', directed by N. P. Gopinath, takes viewers to Mookambika Temple, with a documentary on the goddess of wealth, knowledge and creation. `Vishu geethangal' and a music concert by K. J. Jesudas will follow.

Viewers sure wouldn't like to miss this one - former Chief Minister, E. K. Nayanar, appears with his wife Sarada teacher in `Subha Dinam', Kairali's morning show, at 7-50 a.m. There is family get-together with cine star Jayaram, his wife and former actress Parvathi and their children. Joining them on the show will be director, Sibi Malayil, whose Vishu release, `Appoonte Veedu, Enteyum', features both Jayaram and his son.

In an interview, Kamalahasan speaks about his sentiments on war. A telefilm, `Devadasi', based on the love and life of a devadasi girl, will be aired at noon. Viewers also get to enjoy `Sathyan musical Nite', in which many evergreen songs from Sathyan films will be sung by M. G. Sreekumar, Radhika Tilak, Asha Sathyan and Jeevan Sathyan.

The blockbuster, `Thenkasippattanam' will be Kairali's bonanza for the day. Suresh Gopi, Dileep, Lal, Samyukta Varma and Geethu Mohandas star in the movie.

Watch out for a special programme on music director, A. R. Rehman. The humour programme, `Alauddin and the Aluminium Lamp', should have viewers in splits. A special episode of `Symphony', a musical programme, featuring playback singer, S. Janaki, promises to be a delight. Asianet ushers in Vishu with `Vishukkazhcha', followed by `Vishukkani' and a music programme, `Swararaagam'. The channel's breakfast show, `Suprabhatham', for the day will wear an all-new look, with rich sets and innovative programme capsules.

An interview with Kavya Madhavan, cine star, is another attraction. Humour programmes like Cine Mala have always had ardent fan following. `Vellarikka Pattanam' should be just what the doctor ordered. Nadir Shah will also present a programme, `Cinema Parody'. The women's show `Vaalkannadi' will feature pop singer Usha Uthup.

However, the highlight of Asianet's Vishu fiesta will be its mega movies. Three movies will be aired on the day - `Kaakkakkuyil', starring Mohanlal and Mukesh, `Megha Malhar', featuring Samyukta Varma and Biju Menon and `Aaraam Thampuran', one of the hits in Lal's moustache-twirling genre films.

Asianet Global has also lined up a host of programmes, including special Vishu programmes and a lot of mega events featuring film stars. The mega event hosted by Asianet as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations at Kochi is also being aired on Global on Vishu day. Almost all Malayalam film stars will make their appearance on these shows.
