Farewell to a principal

CHENNAI: "May you become an international university of repute."

This was the benediction from Indhrani Sridharan to Ethiraj College for Women at the end of a nearly five-hour farewell felicitation on the occasion of her retirement as Principal.

Recalling her 37 years in the college since the time she joined in 1968 as a Tutor in History, she said it was her dream that Ethiraj College should be known nationally and internationally. Calling the college her world, she said, "Not one day have I regretted having taken to teaching. The Ethiraj College gave me that pride."

The evening began with Carnatic vocalist Sudha Raghunathan, an alumnus of the college, rendering the invocation song.

The sharing by colleagues, old students and professors was interspersed with humour as speaker after speaker highlighted qualities of sincerity, hard work, commitment, administrative excellence and humaneness that Dr. Indhrani espoused.

While S. Jagadeesan, chairman, Ethiraj College Trust, commended her sense of discipline, S. Natarajan, former chairman of the Trust, said when the management was looking for a person with vision and drive, she was the unanimous choice.

C.J. Nirmal, former Professor of History, Madras Christian College, said, "History made her and she made history."

Asha Raja, an advocate and old student, Sheila Mutunayagam, Reader in Physics Yashodha Shanmugasundaram, former principal, D. Victor, former Director of Collegiate Education, Annamma Philip, Principal, Stella Maris College, and a few faculty members joined in commending the outgoing principal.
