Different languages

A COUNTRY which has so many different languages is bound to run into trouble during functions where people speaking different languages have to interact with one another. Though English ends up being the mainstay when people have to overcome language barriers, at other times when it is not the common medium known to all, translation seems to be the best bet.

A recent function attended by Hindi and Tamil speaking people found the speakers attempting to speak in English and Tamil or Hindi and Tamil for optimum communication. For those who could not understand the parts of the speeches rendered in Tamil or English, one of the audience translated the salient points into Hindi. Members from the audience too pitched in to translate what was being said to their neighbours, making for a delightful experience for the linguistically inclined while a few who knew all three languages were a bit bored.
