Being a role model

IAS rank-holders are most in demand these days. It is tiring times for them as it becomes difficult for them to avoid innumerable felicitation functions. Says Shaila A., the 49th rank holder in the Civil Services examination, ``some of the functions cannot be avoided like those held at the local level etc''.

Recently, Aswathy S., the third rank holder, was felicitated in the city. Most of these felicitations are organised by socio-cultural groups, and it is likely that they are looking to uphold a `role model' for the present times.

Shaila, who was honoured by the Chavara Cultural Centre, feels that quality of higher education in Kerala is rather poor. Compared to premier institutions, there is not enough scope for the all round growth of a student since there are hardly any interactive sessions. Education should not be confined to learning lessons and writing examinations.

Most of the university rank-holders here might lose out at the national level. Here, it is up to the student to develop himself or herself, but in institutions outside Kerala, the institution too plays a role in developing the students' skills.
