Backyard herbal resources

City life is taking a green and healthy turn. The civic authorities, in association with an agency committed to the cause of protecting and propagating traditional knowledge and use of medicinal plants, have initiated a programme for setting up medicinal plant gardens in Kochi.

One such herbarium was inaugurated at the Subhash Bose Park in the city the other day.

The Ochanthuruthu-based Thapovanam has taken up the challenge of educating city folks on the priceless herbal treasure of our land and its ancient wisdom.

The guiding principle of this project is to make the Kochiites aware of the use and possibilities of medicinal plants that can be planted in our backyards. It also aims at creating awareness among the city-dwellers about the scope of using these medicinal herbs for treating common ailments such as fever, headache, burn injuries and cough.

The move comes in the wake of the realisation that our traditional knowledge is being forgotten whereas a number of foreign countries are reaping rich dividends by patenting our traditional wisdom.

Awareness programmes on the medical applications of herbs and remedies will be organised as part of the medicinal herb garden project.

In the first phase, one more medicinal plant garden is to be set up at the Cochin College, according to the civic authorities.

At a later stage, the Corporation plans to set up such gardens at various city centres.
