Arm-twisting tactics

The controversies surrounding mineral water and soft drinks were both triggered by the laboratory findings by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a Delhi-based NGO. The Health Ministry or the Government regulator or testing authorities had no role here. There are three kinds of international guidelines — from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the WHO and the EU. The EU norms are the most stringent.

The soft drink manufactures claim that by bench-marking their products against the EU norms, the CSE had created unnecessary panic. My contention is that this is another offshoot of the arm-twisting tactics of the Western lobbies.
