An outstanding cadet

Benny Jacob Thomas

REMEMBER A National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadet from Bangalore's Jyothi Nivas College who is now waiting to go to Russia? Well, meet a chap who has "been there, done that.''

Actually, Benny Jacob Thomas of Christ College did not go to Russia. In August, he went to the U.K. as part of an International Cadet Exchange programme conducted by the Ministry of Defence, U.K.

Benny, a second-year journalism student, and 12 other NCC cadets from various parts of the country (he represented Karnataka and Goa), had a month-long "familiarisation with the British Army, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Air Force,'' and got to shoot rifles, fly gliders, and see landmarks such as the Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, and Cambridge University.

Naturally, they all had a grand time. They didn't shop much, as it was extremely expensive, the young man says. He also reportedly scored top marks for marksmanship. And when they came back, Benny was made a senior under officer of the NCC 9th Battalion in his college. What next for this enterprising lad? Well, he plans to take the Combined Defence Service entrance examination next January.
