Against cruelty

CELEBRATED FOR his sleek, exotic designs, fashion designer Hemant Trevedi has now given his admirers yet another reason to applaud.

Besides announcing his decision to stop designing with leather, Hemant has also stepped down as director and choreographer of the fashion show at Chennai's annual International Leather Fair.

``Sorry, I am a member of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals,'' says Hemant. "I won't be doing such shows any more and will use cruelty-free synthetic materials instead of leather.''

``No one has the right to use a fashion show as a public platform to air one's grievances or to justify the so-called progress of the Indian leather industry, especially when there is a cause that is so much greater and needs to be brought to public notice,'' he adds.
