A story about love and life

THIS YOUNG man is keeping his fingers crossed as Friday the 13th approaches. And no, contrary to the usual superstitions and horror tales, he's just hoping that his love story will be a success.

"Everybody is saying that Friday the 13th is a day for horror tales but this is fortunately a love story! Actually, it is also a situational comedy -- a light hearted film. But at the end of the day, it is a love story,'' says first time director, Samir Karnik, referring to the upcoming release of "Kyun! Ho Gaya Na...''.

And like every love story, Samir has promised a twist in this one as well. The tale revolves around Arjun Khanna and Diya Malhotra -- played by Vivek Oberoi and Aishwarya Rai. And not to forget, "Uncle'', portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan. While Arjun is cool and trendy, Diya is a strong-minded girl, who knows exactly what she wants. But here's the twist -- contrary to the usual Bollywood masala movie, here Arjun despite his cool image believes in arranged marriages while Diya is looking for the right guy to settle down with.

A story about love and life

"There were just too many movies with the usual theme and so I just thought why not flip the theme on its head. In this film, the boy's views are conventional while the girl wants to find her own life partner. This is a simple story about love and life. But then who said love and life are that simple?'' says Samir who has also incidentally written the script.

Whether the film sets the cash registers ringing or not, will be decided on Friday the 13th but Samir has enjoyed his debut as a director. "Everything that could go wrong with the film has gone wrong. Both Aishwarya and Vivek had their accidents. It's been a roller coaster ride! But I am very satisfied with what I have seen in the end,'' say Samir.

The film apart, making "Kyun! Ho Gaya Na!'' has been a dream come true for Samir. And the dream, he reveals, is not so much making the film, as it was making it with Big B. "I have always wanted to make a film with Amitabh Bachchan. And now I have finally done it! It was the most wonderful experience. I think the time that we had during the outdoor shooting was great. He is so experienced, so professional. He keeps the unit alive. And even though I am so much younger than him, he was so respectful towards me,'' says Samir.

And while Samir is waiting for the final verdict, he's already planned his next move. "I have two scripts that I have in mind. And while it's fun directing a script that has been written by yourself, I don't mind working on someone else's script as long as it's good. But immediately, as soon as the film is released, I am going for a holiday!'' laughs Samir.
