A fresh perspective on fashion

IF FASHION designing is combined with the traits of simplicity, serenity and style, think of Deepika Govind. The designer's latest store off the chic M.G.Road is a statement in creativity, a break away from conformist thinking, a fresh perspective on fashion itself. Simple, wearable apparel is Deepika's strength. Quite predictable indeed from someone whose cut, proportion and minute detailing of clothing has had the fashion crowd abuzz.

Ask her: "I favour the simple, clean lines, perfectly streamlined styles that balance a cautious play of colour and texture and give the garment a season-less edge,'' says the self-taught designer. Deepika's garments are all about updated classic designs, rejuvenating traditional to contemporary. A casual, cool and careless sophistication runs through her lines, which are primarily semi-formal, with a contemporary slant. The silhouettes are apparently lean. "I detest overload,'' she says and adds "I like to see elegance and women who prefer simplicity and allure over excess.''

Now a note about the store itself, a place which echoes the philosophy of Zen. Here's what the eye sees: natural wood colour for the units, textured flooring, the Zen garden that greets you at the entrance, seated beneath the garment units — large trays of sand in swirls.

But what does the trays of sand mean. Deepika answers: "We have a chance to glimpse the meaning of the world in a grain of sand. The sand symbolises the empty mind and is raked in swirls. The designs and patterns you rake show your feelings in the sand.''

To catch the designer, her store and her works, head straight to The Deepika Govind Store at 21/11, Craig Park Layout, M.G.Road, or you can contact her over Ph: 5321786. Open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the designer is available for consultation from 11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
