A festival of music

MARGAZHI, THE month cherished for its balmy breeze and plethora of music festivals, is yet to come. But the enchanting music is here well before time.

Music lovers can treat themselves to a series of enlivening evenings hosted by Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Triplicane, this week. Eminent singers will display their talents by performing `Ragam Tanam Pallavi' concerts, which is considered to capture the complex aspects of Carnatic music.

This kind of concert is highly improvised and consists of a detailed `raga alapana' followed by `tanam' in the same raga. Slated to begin on June 4, the three-daylong fest will have two concerts every day.

Jayanthi Kumaresh will begin the series by playing Kharaharapriya raga and Misra Triputa talam in the musical instrument, veena on June 4 at 6 p.m. Other singers who would participate in the series of concerts include Bhushany Kalyanaraman (Kambhoji raga), R. Ganesh (Keeravani raga), Suguna Purushotham (Vachaspati raga), Gayathri Girish (Hemavathi raga). Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam will end the series by drenching the audience with a shower of honey. She will sing songs based on Amritha Varshini and Anandabhairavi ragas.

These concerts, to be held at Narada Gana Sabha, will also be a learning experience to Carnatic music students. For details, contact the sabha at T.P. Koil Street, Triplicane. Ph: 28441837.
