A feast for book lovers

The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, seems to be the star attraction at the ongoing book fair organised in the city by the DC Books and Current Books.

Dr. Kalam's autobiography "Wings of Fire", its Malayalam translation, and his other works including "India 2020 - Towards a New Millennium" are the most-sought-after works in English, along with the biography of renowned singer, M. S. Subbalakshmi, written by T.J.S. George.

The poetry collections of V. Madhusoodanan Nair, "Naranathubhranthan" and "Gaandharvam", "Uppu" of O. N. V. Kurup as well as collection of poems by A. Ayyappan too have proved to be a big draw for Malayalam book lovers.

Apart from books, the show also features a section on "audio" books. The autobiography of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in an abridged form and Zachariah's novel as well as some poetry collections are exhibited in this group. The fact that these are priced less than the books seems to be the major attraction, the organisers say.

Another draw at the fair is the Malayalam version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica brought out by DC Books. The three-volume book is priced Rs. 1,750. Though the book was provided with a CD ROM, the organisers say the CD ROMs are out of stock and are yet to be supplied with the book. Though the sale of English books is on a high, organisers say there are still takers for novels such as "Brigadier kathakal" of Malayatoor Ramakrishnan, "Neermaathalam poothappol" and "Ente Katha" of Madhavikkutty (Kamala Suraiyya), "Gurusagaram" and "Khasakkinte ithihaasam" of O. V. Vijayan and "Puzha kadannu marangalkkidayilekku" of T. Padmanabhan, this year's Ezhuthachan award winner.

Amidst the appeal of fiction and books on various subjects, the miniature Adhyathma Ramayanam, which the DC Books claims as their speciality, has emerged as a hot favourite. The two-volume pocket edition of the Ramayanam, which is hardly about the length of the thumb, is provided with a magnifying glass and is priced Rs. 120.

Advance booking for the complete works of poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai has been arranged at the fair. As a special offer, the first 1,000 orders for the book would be provided with a free audio CD containing a rendering of the poems of Changampuzha by noted singers.

The organisers are offering a discount ranging from 10 per cent to 40 per cent for all buyers, while the VIP and VIP Gold Card holders get an additional discount.

The exhibition, which opened at the VJT Hall on Saturday, will continue up to August 7.
