A basketball roadshow

CHENNAI'S OWN `Magic' Johnsons and Shakeel O'Neals (or at least those who aspire to be one of those big U.S. stars) came out early morning not just to show off their skills, but more to promote sport and fitness.

Ace Basketball Club, which is celebrating its golden jubilee this year, organised a `dribblethon.' It was a relay event in which a group of basketball players dribble the ball for a short distance, where another group of players takes over, and the relay continues.

The club's president, M.S. Venkataraman, said the event supported by Ashok Leyland and Cosco, was organised mainly to focus on the need for today's youth (deemed by many as mouse potatoes, a new generation that sits, peers and loses itself in the world of Internet, E-mail, chat and computer games) to take up some form of sports activity. And naturally, also to promote basketball.

The `dribblethon' started early on Sunday from the YMCA grounds at Nandanam (where Ace played its first match in 1952).

It passed Anna Salai, Nandanam, Venkatanarayana Road, North Usman Road, before moving into the Corporation playground at Somasundaram street, a distance of 2.5 km.

A similar event was held 25 years ago, when the club celebrated its silver jubilee.
