13-foot bronze statue

AMIDST SPECULATION over who will participate in the centenary celebrations, the residents of the birthplace of the tallest among contemporary politicians have completed the task of making the tallest statue for him. The Bharat Ratna K. Kamaraj Centenary Statue Committee has got the 13-foot-high bronze statue ready well in time. The unique feature of the statue, sculpted by the Chennai-based Nagappa Jagannathan, is that its head is made of five metals. The giant statue of Kamaraj is to be installed at the entrance to Virudhunagar on the Madurai Bypass Road, according to M. S. T. Mohan, convenor. The committee members have gone from house to house to collect contributions for the making of the statue in order to ensure that every resident of Virudhunagar felt a sense of participation in paying tribute to the great leader. The members of the statue committee are confident that the Prime Minister, A. B. Vajpayee, will unveil the statue to mark the culmination of the centenary celebrations of Kamaraj.
