`Talks will continue'

SINGAPORE May 9. Talks between Myanmar's military and the just-freed leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), Aung San Suu Kyi, will continue, a top military officer announced in Yangon today.

``The reconciliation process between the Opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and military leaders will continue according to the mutual agreements on both sides,'' he said in Yangon.

``Both sides have agreed not to divulge details of the talks,'' the military official said, confirming that Ms. Suu Kyi's release appears part of a larger dialogue process. ``But we will be able to tell you at appropriate times in future when the talks progress in momentum.''

Separately, reports from Yangon quoted an NLD statement as saying that the party's basic position on issues remained the same. ``The release of Aung San Suu Kyi cannot be seen as the triumph of democracy....we must step up from this stage to meaningful political dialogue,'' the NLD's central executive committee said.
