Former Sri Lankan Army chief Sarath Fonseka, whose nomination to Parliament through the ruling United National Party (UNP)’s national list has been challenged in the Supreme Court, was on Thursday sworn in as the Cabinet Minister for Regional Development.
He took oath before President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat.
The Centre for Policy Alternatives, a civil society organisation, has moved the Supreme Court on the ground that as per a provision of the Constitution, only a person whose name was included in the district nomination papers or national list submitted by a political party concerned could fill vacancy in Parliament. Mr. Fonseka became an MP earlier this month following a pact he signed as the leader of the Democratic Party with the UNP to join a coalition.
