Mubarak's son not in race

Cairo: The Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak's son tried to end public speculation about his political ambitions by declaring that he won't run as a candidate in this fall's presidential elections. He said his father who made the surprise announcement earlier this year to allow multi-candidate elections — had yet to say whether he himself would run for the post again. ``I'm not a candidate,'' Gamal Mubarak said at a news conference at the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Party. Mr. Gamal (41) heads a powerful policy-making committee in the NDP. Egypt is witnessing a heated political debate since Mr. Mubarak (76) ordered the constitutional amendment that would allow more than one candidate to run for President — the first since ``yes'' or ``no'' referendums since the 1952 military coup. — AP
