A newspaper in two sizes

LONDON SEPT. 26. The idea of a newspaper simultaneously coming out in more than one size might sound strange, but a respected British daily is going to do just. In an innovation, aimed at giving readers a greater choice, The Independent will now be available both as a conventional broadsheet and a tabloid at the same time on weekdays. The tabloid version will be a word-for-word, line-for-line copy of the broadsheet down to "every story, every columnist, every picture, every feature''-and the price.

Claiming to be the "world's first newspaper'' to give readers such a choice, The Independent said that it would cater to morning commuters who needed a more convenient format to read on the train. However, critics have dismissed it as a gimmick to shore up its declining circulation.
