Soldiering on

Indian army soldiers will no longer have any problems coordinating with their colleagues on the battlefront. A hand held computer SATHI Situational Awareness and Tactical Handheld Information — (SATHI) will soon equip them to co-ordinate easily with their comrades. Conducting the final user trials in Jammu and Kashmir, the device was built by Encore Software, the pioneer of Simputer in coordination with a team of military engineers.

About 90 of the product have been deployed for user trials. SATHI is the world's first integrated battle computer that that weighs 875 grams, works in hot desert conditions, operates on the open source Linux platform, and is made to order with a Geographical Information System (GIS); internal radio modem; encrypted software and armed with powerful batteries and the means to send text messages.
