Run for water

EXPRESSIONS: The children understood the issue well enough to spread awareness.

S.S. KAVITHA

It was not just talent that came to the fore, but powerful messages on water conservation were conveyed by the children through their works.

Is it not right on the part of human beings to save water for a sunny day? The water war has begun among humans but still, we do not seem to have realised the importance of conserving this natural resource that gives life to all. Realising that one of the ways to save water was to create awareness on the importance of water, especially among school children, the DHAN Foundation, a city-based non-governmental organisation organised essay and slogan writing and drawing competitions for children. The organisers had organised the competitions on water-based themes such as potable water, judicious use of water, rainwater harvesting, recycling of water and concern for water resources. The competition helped the children delve into the issue and allowed them to think on the various strategies of saving water for future generations.Children's imagination ran riot but they confined themselves to the city limits! The pollution factor revolved around Madurai-Vaigai and the industries. One of the paintings presented health hazardous scenes owing to the polluted river water.

Three categories

The competitions were conducted under three categories — first category of Std. VI to VIII students, second category of Std. IX and X, and the third category of Std. XI and XII students. The competitions were conducted as part of the "Madurai Marathon - 2007" for the cause of water. The public, district administration and non-governmental organisations joined hands for a noble cause of spreading awareness among people on the need to conserve water. The competitions assumed significance with the Union Government declaring 2007 as "Water Year - Year of more crop and income per drop of water." Perhaps the children's words might make a change in the minds of grown-ups.
