Government High School

The Centre for Women's Studies of the Bharathidasan University, in association with the NSS Unit, University Departments, observed the World AIDS Day by holding an awareness programme for school adolescent boys and girls at Government High School, Mandaiyur. Students of classes VIII to X participated in the programme.

Dr. Manimekalai, Director, Centre for Women's Studies and Programme Officer of the Red Ribbon Club, explained in detail the nature of AIDS and its causes.

The difference between HIV and AIDS, how HIV becomes AIDS, the time period for its confirmation, ways of transmission, preventive methods, myths and stigma associated with AIDS were enumerated.

Dr. Manimekalai pointed out that worldwide, AIDS affects 25 per cent of children between the age group of 0-14 years.

The Research Investigator, Gopalakrishnan, explained the virus inception, its identification and transmission.

The students took active participation in the interaction session at the end and got their doubts cleared.
