Gems and jewellery

The Department of Posts, India, issued six postage stamps valued at Rs. 3 each on gems and jewellery. The release was to mark the inauguration of INDEPEX ASIANA 2000.

The first stamp shows a bead necklace from Indus Valley, while the second depicts a gold necklace from Taxila. The third is a turban ornament called sarpech worn by the nobles of the Mughal court. The fourth is an 18th Century necklace studded with nine kinds of precious stones known as navaratna, the fifth is a tali or mangalsutra of the 19th Century and the last is a kanthia necklace, a temple jewellery of the 18th Century.
