Education, for all

THE FOUNDATION: Free coaching after school.

DevTara Foundation offers the children of Pudukkuppam village a chance to do something different.

Education is a prime requisite in any society. More so, in a country like India which is rich in contrasts, of rich and poor. In many places even basic education is a luxury and is often dispensed with. Approximately 12 kms from Pondicherry, on the Cuddalore Road, are the villages of Pudukuppam and Purnankuppam. Beyond these fishing hamlets is situated the resort owned and run by Raj Kondappa, a French-influenced Indian, who grew up in the Far East. He is a passionate hotelier, publisher and philanthropist. Raj lives in a 110-year-old bungalow in Pondy furnished with treasures from the East and India. He publishes books on India and the East, in French, including works of Satyajit Ray. Reading is something he is keen to share, and on March 5, he launched the DevTara Foundation in Pudukuppam village, to enable the local children to have free coaching after school. Milk and biscuits will be provided, and yoga, games and music will be organised. The older children will be given vocational training. Pudukuppam could become a model village in a few years, setting the tone for other places along the route, literally spreading the word.
