It had all the ingredients of a successful quiz show — sharp minds at work, a vibrant quizmaster ready to pop up with brainteasers, a responsive audience. And, to top it all, India's grand quizmaster Siddartha Basu. The Hindu Young World Quiz 2003, held at New Delhi's Shankarlal Murlidhar auditorium this past week, had only one team as winners by rule but all went home with a sense of participation and satisfaction of having proved their mettle. Interestingly, at the end of the two-hour show, the audience topped the scorecard.

The winners were the duo from Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram with 95 points. The team members — Akash Bansal and Avik Ganguly — left Springdales School, Pusa Road behind with a margin of 50 marks. The third position was a tie between Mother's International School and Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, both scoring 30 points each. But it was definitely not the day for St Columba's School. They could garner only 10 points.

Thrilled to win the final round after beating about 450 students from various schools in the preliminary rounds, both Avik and Akash are now looking forward to taking part in the All India contest to be held in Hyderabad in November. They said that though they had participated in The Hindu Young World Quiz once before, they could not make it to the top. "That is why we are very happy," both said.

Chief guest Siddartha Basu, who sat through the entire quiz show, gave away the trophies and other gifts to the winners and the other participating teams. To add to the programme, Siddhartha Basu also asked questions and the winners took away quiz books written by him. At the end of the programme, Basu complimented not only the students for active participation and alertness, but also the popular quizmaster V V Ramanan for carrying out the programme with vibrancy.

The title sponsor for the quiz is Eveready Industries India Ltd., and the co-sponsors are Camlin, `Little Hearts' from Britannia, `Fast Trac watches from Titan, Hansaplast, Competition Success Review, Sify iWay, Hercules Cycles, Liberty, NIIT, Base Terminal and Coca Cola. The event was managed by Quizwalahs.
