No role model

A. Srivathsan’s article hits the nail on the head with its title “Fans do not make a following”. Youngsters today lack a proper role-model and indulge in acts like pouring milk over posters etc. This vacuum is filled by film actors. Cinema is a powerful medium; but huge crowds jostling for tickets, prepared to pay exorbitant price for a ticket on first show, waiting hours to get entry into the theatre point to moral bankruptcy.

The general perception in the North — that South Indians are film crazy and do not distinguish reel fantasy from real life — is not true. Except MGR, NTR and Jayalalitha, no other film star in the South has been able to convert his/her popularity into votes. Other extremely popular stars like Prem Nazir, Sivaji Ganeshan, Vijayakanth and Rajnikanth were not successfull in politics. On the other hand, in north India Bollywood stars were successful in using their star status to enter politics. What other qualifications did Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Govinda, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Dharmendra have when they became MPs?
