Frozen no more

Scientists at a conference in New Orleans made the startling claim that the Arctic, as we once knew it, is no more. They claimed that the region was definitively, and perhaps irreversibly, moving towards an ice-free state. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) 2017 Arctic health report card, found that the pace of the loss sea ice in the region is unprecedented in the past 1,500 years. The report also says that the Arctic “shows no sign of returning to (a) reliably frozen region,” as seen in the past several decades, calling the current state of the Arctic the ‘new normal’.
