First film

Piyush Dinker Pandya

Piyush Dinker Pandya

His first film is more a means to come in terms with the idea of film making than what theme it carries, says Piyush Pandya the director of "American Desi". The film is taken largely from his own experiences of growing up in the U.S. "I've lived a lot of it myself and had the same experiences. The children of all immigrants have to learn to balance two cultures. We ate Indian food, spoke Marathi and my family was religious. But when I stepped outside it was completely different." Pandya translated all this and more onto the big screen and got himself an Indian actor, also born and brought up in the U.S., to play the lead role in the film. "He was perfect," says Pandya, "having had similar experiences and a similar life". Pandya however is keen to point out that his film has no messages or moral. "It's pure entertainment. At the same it tells people we have a great culture and there is no need to be embarrassed."
