De on design

NOT known to mince words, novelist SHOBHA DE on a recent trip to the Capital, while talking about the Indian fashion industry said, "Indian designers need a reality check." De maintained that though India had centuries-old designing skills, the entire industry today was "totally unprofessional." and would not be able to survive in a global climate. "Fashion as an industry is not about egos. It's about vision and originality." said she. De even feels that the Lakme Fashion Week has no goal and is more like a huge social gathering. While she maintains that it is essential to feel good and look good, she is against the "anorexic bimbettes" of today. "You have to be a smart eater. One should nurture one's body and treat it like a temple." De should know. After all she's managed to keep her looks and her figure.
