Puneeth Rajkumar says one can see shades of his father’s personality, ideals and values in Raajakumara, releasing on March 23

There is a reason for Puneeth Rajkumar fans to celebrate this Ugadi as Raajakumara hits 350 screens across Karnataka on March 23.

When the poster for Raajakumara was released, people started finding similarities between this film and Kasturi Nivasa , a 1971 black-and-white blockbuster of thespian Rajkumar. The old hit had created history of sorts in Kannada cinema. Puneeth with a black coat and a white pigeon on his shoulder, resembled the poster of the legendary actor who was admired by generations of cine goers. Besides that there is a signature tune of the film Aadisi Nodu Beelisi Nodu Urulihogadu, which was a landmark philosophical song, that touched hearts of millions.

Puneeth looks tense considering the expectations of the people. “ Bombe helutaite, matte helutaite, neene Raajakumara....” goes the lyrics of one of the songs from the film. Puneeth became emotional during the album release.

“When I heard this song for the first time, memories of my father gushed out as if a dam had burst,” he said.

The film has a huge star cast comprising Sharat Kumar, Prakash Raj, Ananth Nag, Chikkanna, Avinash, Sadhu Kokila, Achyut Kumar and Dattanna, besides Puneeth and Priya Anand. Director Santosh Anandaram says V. Harikrishna has composed an excellent score.

To end speculation Puneeth said, “The film is not about Appaji. The audience can however, definitely expect shades of his personality, ideals and values. Raajakumara is a family entertainer, with all ingredients of a commercial film including, romance, comedy action.” Sharath Kumar, who is acting in Kannada film for the fourth time and first time with Puneeth said, “Rajkumar means Karnataka and Karnataka means Rajkumar.

With a title like Raajakumara , people would expect a lot from the movie. As far as my knowledge goes, qualities of Annavru (Rajkumar) will be visible throughout the film. I saw Annavru in Puneeth.”

Puneeth is elated about associating with an actor like Sharath Kumar, who plays his father in the film. “It is an opportunity and honour to act with Sharat Kumar.

“Though one cannot match him in terms of experience, he behaved like a friend of mine,” said Puneeth.

For the director, Raajakumara is his second big venture after Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari starring Yash and Radhika. He is elated about the response the trailer got when it was released on March 6.

“Over 1 million viewers views in just four days and four lakh people watched the songs on Juke Box. People are repeatedly watching ‘ Bombe Helutaite...’ .”

Producer Vijay Kirangadur is planning to release the film outside Karnataka too.

“We are planning to release the film in Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Mumbai simultaneously. After a week, the film will be released abroad, in USA, UK, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and UAE.”

Santosh describes Raajakumara as a “Feel-good film with massive entertainment quotient. It is a different film with two story tracks bridged by Puneet’s character.” The film is well timed.

“The film is coming a week after Puneeth’s birthday on March 17. We are targeting the summer holiday crowd. They would say ‘our Appu is back’ after watching the film,” Santhosh said.

When I heard this song for the first time, memories of my father gushed as if a dam had been opened.
