Project `Feel Safe'

There are a lot of concerned groups working towards helping those in the throes of violence and abuse.

Soroptimist International of Chennai Downtown, a part of the worldwide organisation of SI clubs that work to improve human rights and advancement of women and children, has made one such effort to promote child safety.

They have designed `Feel Safe' cards and pocket calendars that have the phone numbers of local organisations and helplines who are eager to help abused children.

Many helplines in the country realise that a child must be listened to, and told that he/she's not the only one, and what is happening to him/her is not to be hidden in shame.

Even though they might not be able to help directly, helplines often contribute to making a child realise that he/she must confide in someone (an adult) who might, in turn, deal with the abuser directly. The helplines also often refer the callers to psychologists, police, social workers, etc.

The `Feel Safe' cards are currently being distributed along with purchases at Landmark, but will soon be given away at different bookstores in the city.

The members of Soroptimist International of Chennai Downtown will also distribute the cards at various schools during the year.
