Partition tale

URMILA MATONDKAR is an example of what Bollywood can do for an Indo-Pak friendship. Recently, she launched the audio of her new film "Pinjar" at the Wagah border and exchanged pleasantries with Pakistani Rangers who were totally in awe of her. "Pinjar" is based on Amrita Pritam's novel by the same name and is set against the backdrop of the riots in Punjab during the Partition.

In the film she plays Paro, a Punjabi `kudi' who is abducted and raped during the riots but when she escapes from her abductors and returns home she is rejected by her family. At the recent film festival in Delhi, "Pinjar" and its director Chandraprakash Dwivedi received a standing ovation.
