New dimension to fusion

GLOBAL INFLUENCES The band members of Oxygen

When children don't act their age, there can be either of two reactions from parents - they'll be out of their mind with worry or be on cloud nine.

Members of the fusion band Oxygen do not act their age (the youngest is sixteen and the oldest twenty), but they are keeping their parents happy. Their eponymous debut album drew rave reviews and led to an interview on CNN. The second fusion album "Dimensions", released recently, comes as a reaffirmation of their talent.

The seven compositions have neatly packaged an experience, one that absorbs influences from the four corners of the world. Desert Mirage is Arabian, Serene Village is folk, in Carnatech, the konnakol takes centre stage, Rain in Paradise is melody, first and last, Phoenix is truly vibrant with staccato and slow bars alternating rapidly, Sarawathi captures the completeness of a symphony. All these were recorded without the aid of software.

The band performed pieces from the album at a release function, which saw guitarist and jazz musician Prassana, sitar artiste Pandit Janardan Mitta, music director Manikanth Kadir, Carnatic musician `Palghat' Sriram and playback singer Unni Menon on stage.
